Ergothioneine, also known as L-(+)-Ergothioneine or simply ERGO, is a rare natural chiral amino acid and antioxidant. It was first discovered by Charles Tanret in 1909 during his research on ergot fungus, and later found in mushrooms and cyanobacteria.
